Weird & Cool Kitchen Gadgets

Browsing around came across this really unique kitchen gadget at DealXtreme, a Pencil Sharpener Style Carrot Planing Tool. I have a thing for kitchen gadgets and love to buy new and unique ones but I have never come across one of these before. Looks cool and thought it is worth sharing. Would be laying my hands on this as well!

Anyway anyone else into buying strange and cool gadgets? even if you are not which are the unique ones you have come across?

Carved vegetables are something you see a lot in Chinese banquets.... or used to, doesn't seem to be as popular as it used to be. The really skilled chefs are amazing to watch when they do it, but they tend to use standard knives and even cleavers not these gadgets!

As for my gadgets.... well, still reckon it is hard to beat my mum's grape scissors, although that banana slicer is close! ;-)

the craved vegetables are good-looking but I think they are too beautiful to eat, so I do not have any weird gadget but a slicer. :D

Carved vegetables do look too nice to eat I tend to admire them more than eat them. But as a child I remember having rows with my siblings as to who gets to eat them...

The easiest one I do for the kids every now and then is carrot flowers - peel the carrot and then carefully (to avoid cutting yourself!) cut four 'V' shaped strips length ways along the carrot (the strips can be eaten as carrot sticks so aren't wasted). The easiest knife to do this with is generally the biggest one you have - I use my chef's knife ie about 20cm long. Then cut the carrot into rounds - each round turns out looking a little like a flower. The better/more careful you are at cutting, the better they look, but frankly unless you're doing it for a competition I wouldn't spend too much time at it. Pop them into a dish with some water and microwave for a minute or so (want to leave them with some crunch), or put them straight into a stir fry etc.
