Shopping on Holidays

I always prefer to take flights in the middle of the week, the reason being comparatively cheaper fares and quieter flights. That works out fine for me but it also means there is no rest before getting back into the routine, so unpacking and sorting out stuff has to be moved to the weekend. On my recent holiday I did the same and taking a midweek flight I had to leave unpacking till the weekend, so this weekend finally managed to sort that out. I must say I am quite pleased with my shopping, it was around 85% of my luggage. To me shopping is an integral part of a holiday, and no not just souvenirs. I have to have my annual fix of shopping abroad, mostly I check when sales are coming on and plan my trip around the dates.

Mostly people shop before going on a trip but to me shopping sprees while on holiday are just plain essential. Just wondering if I belong? Is shopping on holidays a must or do you limit it to getting a few souvenirs?

Tips for Men:

1. Make sure you are no where in sight, when your lady decides to go shopping, this strategy will not save you money (sorry!) but you might be able to avoid a trip to the mall
2. If somehow you do end up going shopping, always go for the freebies because after that everything is down hill from there
3.Always make a list of things you actually want before going to the mall. If you are lucky you will able to buy 20% of the stuff you actually want.
4. Always take pain killers with you because by the end of the trip you will be emotionally & physically bruised & exhausted
5.If you are single & want to have a family in future avoid kids section, because you will be looking at your future & will find a nagging 5 year old draining your wallet for something which will hold his interest for 15 micro seconds
6. Make sure your lady knows how to fight because she is the one who will save you from swearing, kicks & bits( Trust me that too happens) when you will be in a dual with another girl over the dress your lady likes

But don't worry soon you will soon develop a leather skin to all this. Well you have to it is inevitable. Cheers !

It depends on the trip for me really, but I never travel solely for or plan a trip around shopping. If there is good shopping while I'm there, I'll definitely make the most of it and it adds to the appeal of some travel destinations. Overall, I plan my trips around cheap airfares, and/or destinations I want to see because of the landmarks and cultural elements.

Keeping shopping and holiday separate sounds like a sensible thing to do, somehow I have never been able to do that. No matter where I am going I check for shopping areas near my destination in advance. Also I tend to plan what I am going to get from the duty free, which for me is always a highlight of a trip abroad.

Great tips Nick, you sure seem like someone who is not at all fond of shopping or at least not with with women :-)

Shopping leaving someone emotionally and physically bruised & exhausted are things I have never heard of...I do hope you stick by your advice above and stay safe ;-)

Heh - as a male I might shudder slightly when being dragged into a shoe shop but then again the roles are reversed when I go to Bunnings.... For the most part I do enjoy shopping....... as for doing it on holidays yes I definitely do, but with the 'global economy' meaning a lot of stuff I would in the past perhaps have bought whilst overseas, I'd buy over the internet and have it sent over.... I limit purchases more to things that might remind me of the trip or otherwise might not be able to get from home. It also means I end up travelling lighter.....
