Nexus 6 Announced (Australian Launch expected in November)

Google has finally announced Nexus 6 launch and it does seem like an impressive phone. It's still not clear when it will be available in Australia but there are speculations about Mid-November availability. It is going to be a lot more expensive than earlier Nexus phones (somewhere in the range of $800s for Australians) but it's seriously big (5.9-inch display) and seriously awesome in terms of pure technical specs.

I proudly owned a Nexus 4 but then got an iPhone 5 and using an iPhone 5S currently. I would have upgraded to an iPhone 6 if my local Telstra dealer had any in stock but now I am seriously considering going to back to Android with Nexus.

My only concern would be that Google will also get access to the remaining 1% of my online life and while I like 'personalized search' and 'recommendations', I wouldn't want Google to take over my entire life (which is likely going to happen with pure Android phones at some point). May be someone needs to come up with a smart phone version of DuckDuckGo.

Who else would get a Nexus 6?

...but looking at upgrading. Thought about the Nexus 5, but - although it was better than the 4 - it wasn't enough to make me want to jump. Had high hopes for the 6/x but the physical size is a bit of a turn-off for me, not to mention the expected price. Yes it is still a good price for a premium handset, it's just not the bargain the 4/5 were. As much as I like a bigger screen, that extra inch means it's also going to be hard to slip in the pocket. If I needed a new handset now, I'd be tempted to consider the Moto X (v2 ie 2014) model that the Nexus 6 is based on. Although it misses out on some of the features of the Nexus 6. it is still pretty decent and is smaller (which appeals to me) and can be got for around the $700 mark. If the Nexus 6 had a fingerprint scanner then I may have considered it, but as it is I'll probably look elsewhere.....

That's a big concern for me as well. I did a quick 'pocket test' with iPhone 6 Plus and didn't like the feeling of walking around with a tablet sized phone stuffed in pant pockets. May be it will take some time getting used to the big screen.

What do you think about OnePlus One? They are starting to turn a few heads as far as the buzz on internet forums is concerned.

Is really interesting for a first product.... it doesn't have a micro sd slot (not a huge issue) and it amazes me that the battery is not designed to be user replaceable even though you can remove the back of the phone and can see the battery just sitting there..... Although it won't get updates as quickly as a Nexus, running CyanogenMod means updates should be released fairly quickly.

The main issue I have with it is the size is even bigger than the iPhone 6 and Nexus 5 so getting a bit too close to 'phablet' territory of the iPhone 6 Plus (or 'nano iPad') for me. Quick comparison:

  • iphone 6 - 5.44 x 2.64 x 0.27 inches (138.1 x 67 x 6.9 mm)
  • nexus 6 - 5.43 x 2.72 x 0.34 inches (137.84 x 69.17 x 8.59 mm)
  • one plusone - 6.02 x 2.99 x 0.35 inches (152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9 mm)
  • iphone 6 plus - 6.22 x 3.06 x 0.28 inches (158.1 x 77.8 x 7.1 mm)

Good price though, so maybe I might try to hunt one down to play with.
