Ideas on how to use technology to wish someone a happy birthday?

I usually do obligatory 'Happy Birthday' stock response that contributes to the Facebook automating a message on my friend’s birthday. But this time I am thinking how can I use technology to wish someone birthday more personally.

Especially I am interested to know how the Apple Watch and other devices / services enable creative apps and methods can be used to recognize someone on their Special Day

A few times I've made a powerpoint or similar presentation as an electronic birthday card - can make them self executing or save as pdf etc, so they can view them if they don't have the app. Can include photos of the past year, or - well - let your imagination take it away. Spending a few minutes on making something like that I think means a lot more than walking into a shop and buying a card, or throwing a 'congrats' message on their facebook wall.... :-)

Smartphones have made this thing easy. Video messages are the best trend I have liked till now.
