Got a free coffee by mistake, should I go back to pay for it?

On a recent day out with a friend we decided that I would go into a shop while my friend will go get coffee and we would meet up at the cafe. Shopping done, I made my way to the cafe where I found my friend waiting for the coffee, 10 more min of waiting and not wanting to wait anymore I got up and asked why it was taking so long. In answer to that I was asked what I had ordered and right away I was handed the take away order. Back in the car I handed my friend one coffee and was told that only one was ordered.

So basically I was given one free by mistake. Freebies are nice but this has me feeling a bit guilty. So what do I do go back and give money for the drink that I got for free or just think of it as compensation for the wait?

Sounds like they did the right thing for the customer (handing over the coffees without question) so if the coffee was ok then I'd go back some time & order another coffee. If it comes in a reasonable time, then I'd mention that you may have got one extra the other day by mistake and leave a tip to the value of the 'free' coffee... if they're slow again well then I'd leave it at that.

Actually, I have the similar experience. But something different . When I finish the dinner ,I forget to pay and leave to go shopping. The other I remember that and go back to pay it.You can not image the happy feeling after you get your should paid bill. Then just go and pay for it.

I would have imagined that someone would have come after you to ok not grab you and take you back to pay but to at least remind you that you have forgotten to pay. Maybe the restaurant was too busy. Good on you that you went back to pay, better to have a guilt free conscious than a free meal!

I have walked out without paying when shopping for clothes, but it wasn't on purpose the shop assistant got talking and gave me the bag with my shopping in it and even said bye have a nice day. I did not realise I had not paid till I went into the next shop.

Went back and paid right away. The funny thing is that the shop assistant had even removed the tags so no alarms went off when I went out.
