Any Cold/Flu Remedies?

I am desperately looking to get out of this cold/flu which has just started to take over since yesterday (mainly result of a boat trip on Sunday without appropriate clothing).

I know internet is filled with remedies but just wondering if someone knows something magical from their experience.

Cheers

Unfortunately not, sorry! The best thing for me is getting plenty of rest (as your immune system works best while you're sleeping) and taking drugs (not natural ones, I'm talking pharmacy strength stuff like paracetamol and codeine) to ease the symptoms. Hope you feel better.

Thanks lisss - I have been taking Panadol and it's helping. I hate the weather though which makes feel even more sick! Can't wait for the summer!

Bought the economy size box of Codral today as I'm starting to go down as well..... as Lisss says basically not much can be done for reducing the length of time it takes to recover so all you can do is make life a little less uncomfortable whilst you recover. Get soft tissues so your nose doesn't get too tender, and just rest. I used to find I bounced back quicker when I was fitter, so maybe that's another reason why I should exercise more! Cheers.

[Oh and by the way, you don't get a cold from being cold - colds are caused by viruses so most likely you were going to get sick anyway! Probably doesn't help, sorry.... ;-) ]

I guess we all like simpler explanations at times :)

My cold is a lot better now. Last night I was able to go for my usual run as well (a bit short version though). Clod and Flu is the second reason I hate winters (first being lack of Cricket).

I tend to get cold like symptoms at the beginning of summer of all things, but it's more hayfever than virus related I suspect more than anything else. Definitely a cold this time though, and I'm currently on the downhill spiral.... usually recover in a day or two though. I hardly get actual colds since I stopped using public transport as much - but I've been doing more travel recently and probably picked something up on the 'plane. Sigh. Love the fact people can't smoke on planes now, but one of the drawbacks I've heard is the airlines have cranked down air replacement with more filtering/re-circulation to save fuel.... not sure how true that is, possibly a rumor started by the tobacco industry! ;-)

Yep this is true, it's a common myth that you get a cold from being cold! However, some research suggests that dried-out nasal passages are more likely allow germs to survive - being cold and dry makes it harder for mucus and nasal hairs to work disease agents out of your nose. Also, dry winter air allows the flu virus to survive and transmit itself. Lastly, cold weather forces us indoors and we tend to be in closer contact and in areas with less ventilation (closed windows etc) which increases the spread of viruses.
